Frances Marion Stevens (Born Sept 29 1824 in Gibson County TN) and in 1845 Married Rebecca Ramsey (Born 1827 in ???)

Josiah and Abigail were both born in NC. By 1824 they had relocated to TN where children joseph was born in 1830 and abigail was born in 1839 were born. By 1845 when Nicodemus was born they were in Bollinger County, MO). Frances got married to Rebecca the same year his little brother Nicodemus was born, also in Bollinger County.

William Harrison Stephens (Born Jan 5, 1847 in Bollinger County MO) and Feb 5 1871 Married Mary Sophia Sara Cook (Born Jan 18, 1854 in Cape Girardeau, MO)

William's son's death certificate shows that he went by his middle name Harrison instead of William.

William was born just 2 years after his father's (Francis) little brother Nicodemus was born. He and his uncle would have been only 2 years apart. His father then had two other children Louisa (1848) and Cincinnatus (1850) . William would have had an aunt that was 1 year younger than him and an uncle that was 3 years younger than him.

Louisa would go on to say Zelpha Mitchell Shanks (See link to grave site below): in 1921, when I was in Missouri on a visit, I was gathering data from Father Shanks about our Shanks families. Then Mother Shanks asked me if I would make a copy of her parents Old Bible and keep it with the Shanks records. She said, "When I am gone I know this old Bible will be destroyed, and in years to come some of the later ones may like a copy." She climbed in the attic, reached back under the eaves and got the old Bible (she had it well tied to keep it from falling apart).

Louisa would go on to say to one of her children: Some of the younger ones of the family had the mistaken idea that the name should be spelled "STEPHENS", but in the old family Bible it was plain "STEVENS", also in "Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri of 1888".

I'm guessing this is where the name changes happened. Louisa's and her brother Francis are Stephens. Louisa's nephew William H (who was actually 1 year older than her) is also named Stephens, but William's son Asa Jefferson is named Stevens. If this had happened in 1988 It would have been about 3 years after William H's death and about 16 years before Asa Jefferson was born.

Asa Jefferson Stevens (Born Jan 6, 1872 in Scopus Bollinger County, MO) and Dec 25, 1889 Married Sarah Jane Masters (Born Feb 2, 1872 in Bollinger County MO)

Asa Jefferson was born in 1872. The June 1880 census record shows him as 8 years old.

This 1880 Census record shows Sarah still living at home, 8 years prior to getting married.

Asa Jefferson and Sara were married at the age of 17

Asa and Sarah's Grave.

The above dearth certificate tells us a few things about him. He died at age 85. His occupation was a blacksmith. He lived in Marble Hill, Street address Marble Hill RR#1. Asa Jefferson died of heart disease, but it lists possible adenomatosis (?) which is an abnormal growth often found on the liver. Asa Jefferson was a widow, Sarah having died 21 years earlier in 1936. Her youngest son, George would have been 30 years old. He is listed as widowed, because his wife Sarah had died 21 years earlier in 1936.

She died at the age of 64 when their youngest child George Pinkney Stevens) was 30 years old. According to Sarah's death certificate A H Stevens is the informant, suggesting that her son Andrew Harrison Stevens was the one who found her. She didn't know who her mother is. The widower is named as Jeff Stevens, meaning that Asa Jefferson probably went by the name Jeff. Her profession is listed as House Keeper, so she didn't work.

The 1900 census shows Jeff A Stevens (perhaps his name was Jefferson Asa and not Asa Jefferson?) with wife Sarah and sons Asa M, Andrew, Ed (edward), and another son born 1897 which isn't listed on the Grave's website.

George Pinkney Stevens (Born March 10, 1906 is Scopus, Bollinger County MO) and Sept 15, 1927 Married Hester Zeda Welch (Born Dec 17, 1911 in Bollinger County MO)

Picture of Hester Zeda

The 1910 census George is listed as 4 years old living with father Asa Jefferson, mother Sara, and siblings Andy (17), Charley (13), Jessie (9), and John Albert (5).

The 1920 census shows that George is 13 years old, living with father Asa Jefferson and mother Sarah. Siblings are Charlie, Jesse, and John. I guess Andy got married and moved away. He was still in school and could read and write.

The 1930 census shows that George, living with wife Hester and Daughter Aela were renting a house. They lived on a farm. George was 24 years old, Hester was 19, and baby Aela was 6 months old. They're listed as General Farmer and employed.

The 1940 census shows that George, living with his wife Hester and children Louise (11), Odell (8), Howard (4), and Eloise (2 Months). Aela is no longer listed, perhaps died?

George's highest level of education was grade 5 and hester's was grade 8. George worked about 50 hours a week and is listed as a farmer. By now they owned their home.

Hester died in Cape Girardeau at St. Francis Hospital on Jan 23, 1941 from in encephalitis (swelling of the brain due to infection) caused by meningitis. The death certificate also lists possibly due to influenza. She was listed as a house wife. She was 29 years old.  Odell would have been 8 or 9 years old when his mother died.

George went on to mary Cloa Allene Klobe on Jun 3, 1950

George Odell Stevens (Born Nov 15 1931 in Lorance) and on July 3, 1950 married Margie Mae Brown (Born Jun 8 1932 in Marble Hill)

In 1935, Margie's residence is listed as RR 2 Bel Rae Crt G, Marble Hill, MO, 63764 According to the U.S. Public Records Index, Volume 2

The 1940 census shows Odell, age 8 in grade 3, living at home with father George, mother Hester, and siblings Louise, Howard, and Eloise. They were in Lorance, Bollinger, Missouri.

In 1950 George Odell and Marie Mae were married. Odell was 19 and Margie Mae was 18. Presumably George Odell moved from Lorance to Marble Hill.

In 1964, first son Stephen Stevens was born. In 1952, Wayne Stevens was born. Brenda Stevens was born ???

In 1993, Stephen Stevens was reported living at Marble Hill, MO, 63764-9502 (1993) from the U.S. Public Records Index, Volume 1.
